About the Mission
My 14 year old daughter, Allison, has been wanting to go on a mission trip ever since she heard about a co-worker going to Africa to help at an orphanage. In November, 2009, our church announced plans to go to the Ukraine during the summer, 2010. Allison looked at me and said I want to do that.
We asked about fundraising and were given the idea of selling eggs door to door. Immediately after getting home, Allison wanted to go door to door and sell eggs for $1 each, it was about 34 degrees out that day. We bundled up, put 3 eggs in our pocket and went to the neighbor, we would sell an egg for $1, then ask the next neighbor to donate an egg. She raised $17 in about 1 hour! She added $5 of her own money to that and we purchased a box of fundraising candy at Sam's. After sells started to die down with the candy bars, my husband, Nick, thought about selling enchiladas.
Our first attempt at selling enchiladas went really well, we sold 27 dozen enchiladas, which we made over a weekend and delivered. We hope to do this again soon! In a little over one month of fundraising we have about 1/8 of what is needed.
Nick will be going with Allison to Ukraine, our goal is to raise at least $4,000 to send them both. We hope to raise more than that so that we can purchase items to be given to the orphanages and to help in other ways as needed once they arrive.
By now you may be wondering, what do they plan to do while in the Ukraine? Well, our church wants to help a church plant to get started! The plan is to hit the streets, talk with people, invite them to the church, share our faith and help out in any ways that are needed.
God has been really working in our family and this experience so far has been amazing!
